           Two Forces That Determine Performance

           Think of your performance as coming from the interplay of two factors working together.

          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           Number one, you the individual executive. That essentially means your leadership skills, and your desire to perform.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Number two is your environment. That means the company culture, the workflow, the incentive structure, interpersonal dynamics, the internal processes… essentially the established system.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           These two combined determine what you and your team can reliably achieve.

           Unfortunately, most coaching focuses on the first factor, the individual. But the second part, the system, may be fundamentally broken.

           2. Broken Workflows That Keep Everyone in Crisis Mode

           When everyone operates in perpetual reaction mode, there's no space for strategic thinking. Leadership efforts are limited because the system keeps dragging you back into the same chaotic loop.

           At the heart of the broken workflow is usually a denial of the system’s capacity. This might mean you’re short staffed, aren’t honest about deadlines, or simply take on too much work.

           3. Organizational Denial That Blames the Individual

           Leaders too, may blame themselves. The work environment is assumed not to be the issue. Instead, leaders “take responsibility” and exhaust themselves trying to compensate for systemic problems.

           Think back to where you were three, five, or even ten years ago. You were probably nervous about the future back then too. But you've grown. You've learned things you didn't even know you needed to learn. You've developed skills that now feel like second nature.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The same process will happen in your new role. A year from now, you'll have new skills. Two years from now, you'll look back and marvel at how much you've grown. This is what I call "the inevitable reality of professional development."
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           When my coaching clients recognize this reality, something shifts in them. They stop expecting to have all the answers on day one, and they start trusting the future.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           When we think about the future, our brains naturally gravitate toward potential problems. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           What could go wrong? What challenges will I face? What if I fail?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This negativity bias gives us a distorted view of reality. We don't consider all the positive things that could happen.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Think about the last five years of your life. Think about the people you've met, the places you've traveled, and the opportunities that came your way. Maybe it was a random conversation that led to a new client, or a new connection that transformed your business.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           These unforeseen good things happened, and the odds are they will continue to happen.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Trust the skills you'll inevitably acquire. Trust the opportunities that will inevitably appear. Trust the path you're on.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Top executives, entrepreneurs and business leaders all have one thing in common: an intentional and energizing morning routine. It sets the tone for the entire day.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Most people start their day in reactive mode. They check their phone. They read the news. They dive straight into their problems. This spikes stress hormones and immediately starts draining their energy.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Instead of being reactive, you can be intentional. Wake up 30 minutes earlier and create some sacred alone time to stoke your positive energy.

           Write down three things you're grateful for.

            This might sound simple, but repetition works. What you're doing is reprogramming your brain to think positively. Instead of letting external pressures control you, you're intentionally choosing optimism.
          &#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Take a minute to appreciate what you wrote then visualize what you’re grateful for. You can even hold a positive, empowering posture while visualizing. Research shows that your physical posture influences your mental outlook and how you spend your energy.

    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;

           Exercise for 30 minutes.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            The benefits are substantial. Morning exercise improves your focus and concentration throughout the day, making you more efficient.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           It buffers cortisol, the stress hormone that builds up and becomes toxic when left unchecked. Lower stress levels mean higher productivity. Plus, morning exercise improves your sleep, which means more energy the next day. The return on investment is enormous.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           That's it. Fifteen minutes of journaling and reflection, plus 30 minutes of movement. Forty-five minutes to set your entire day up for success.

           High performers often skip breaks, convinced they're losing time. They're not. There's something called the misperception of efficiency. You think you're working harder than you actually are. Around 2 or 3 p.m., your productivity and focus naturally decline due to circadian rhythms. A break resets you and gives you a second wind.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Take breaks at multiple levels:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Daily:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            Take a 15-minute break. Walk outside. Read. Do something completely different from work. The reset will make you more efficient when you return.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Weekly:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            Leave work early once a week. Do something that recharges you.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Monthly:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            Take a full day off. Go on a hike with friends or family. Recharge mentally, physically, and spiritually.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Quarterly:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            Take a retreat or mini vacation. Get some perspective.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Yearly:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            Take at least one week completely off. Travel somewhere new or visit a place you love. Enrich your life with new experiences.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Your body is the vessel that carries you. If you don't maintain it, it won't perform at its best.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           You have a finite amount of energy per day. A low-value task costs the same time and energy as a high-value task. Yet a lot of people spend their energy on work that doesn't require their unique skills.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           You're talented and you can probably do almost anything exceptionally well. But that's the problem. You're unwilling to give up tasks you're good at, even when someone else should be doing them.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           Do an Audit of Your Tasks.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Grab a sheet of paper and create two columns. In the first column, list high-value activities. In the second column, list low-value tasks.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           In the high-value column, star your top three. These require your expertise and are high- stakes tasks.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           In the low-value column, star the lowest-value activities. Maybe it's scheduling. Maybe it's meetings you don't need to attend. Start delegating these tasks or drop them altogether.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           This exercise is critically important to preserving your energy and performing at your best. Unless you audit your tasks, you won't know where your energy is going, and you’ll likely fall right back into the same old routine. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h2&gt;&#xD;

            Take a 15-minute break today. Walk outside or read something unrelated to work.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Write down your high-value and low-value tasks. Identify one low-value task to delegate this week.

      <title>Negative Self-Talk at the Olympic Trials: Why Everyone Needs a Coach</title>

           "I don't need a coach." That was my attitude, way back in the day... after qualifying for the 1992 Olympic Trials.
           &#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           I was stubborn and thought I knew it all.  How was a coach going to help me, I wondered. I just needed to train harder, right?
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           In retrospect, I know now that my younger self really needed a coach.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
            
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           "You don't know what you don't know" is a cliché, but perfectly applicable here. I knew nothing about sport psychology, self-talk, priming, visualization... all of those things were foreign to me.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           My biggest block back then? I was way too hard on myself. My mind was full of negative self-talk, especially when I didn't do well in a race.
          &#xD;

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           Most people are their own harshest critics. While a small dose of self-criticism is okay, too much has a demotivating effect.

            My clients are able to catch their negative self-talk and nip it in the bud. If your self-talk is not at least 50% of your daily thinking, I suggest you change that!

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            As the year comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on how much I've learned since that big bicycle race many years ago.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The lesson here is to be open to learning. If you think you know enough, you probably don't.
          &#xD;

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           High performing athletes have a clear mission. They know why they train, why they sacrifice, and why winning is important.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           As a business leader you also need a clear mission, one that guides when times are tough. This is not one of those framed mission statements that collect dust on the back wall of the board room. This is your own personal inward-facing mission statement that rings true for you.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;

           Write down your mission statement. Why do you want to win at business? Include practical reasons like compensation and career growth, and also deeper reasons like impact and legacy.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           2. Skill Development

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Talent is valuable but it’s not a substitute for training. In sports the best athletes keep training even when they’re at the top. The same applies in business. Block time on your calendar for skill development.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Some suggestions for upping your skill level:
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Get a coach or mentor who will challenge you.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Join a high performing peer group or attend leadership summits.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Pick one uncomfortable skill to work on, such as public speaking, negotiation, or people management.
           &#xD;

           3. Manage Your Energy
          &#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Energy is your most finite resource. I recommend you take a simple inventory: write down two columns, one for “energy boosters” and one for “energy drainers.” Then eliminate or delegate the drainers and schedule in more of the boosters.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           These drainers and boosters can be tasks or people. Guard your energy and keep your vibe positive.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Another way to keep your energy high is to create an intentional morning routine. Things like reflecting on gratitude or your ideal customer get you primed for the day.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           You can also identify times when you have performed at your best replicate the conditions. Ask yourself what you were doing and who you were with when your energy was high, and you felt confident, creative and decisive.
          &#xD;

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           Sports teams have defined positions for a reason. Overlapping roles creates confusion. A classic example is in baseball when an overzealous outfielder runs out of his zone and literally collides with his teammate.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

           As a business leader you need to map out zones of responsibility and make roles crystal clear. Clarity reduces employees’ anxiety and increases productivity.

           In sports and in business, hierarchy and authority provide something called psychological safety. This is a state of mind where players or employees understand who is responsible for what and there’s no guessing about who’s in charge. This reduces anxiety and allows people to focus on performance.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Authority is not dictatorship. It’s executive decision making, and the willingness to make the tough calls.

           The mentorships that made the man

            Athletic careers are often remembered for the typical moments: the big contract, the championship, the endorsement deals. But Sebatian's trajectory was shaped by two fundamental themes: a relentless persistence and powerful mentors.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Sebastian’s ascent was slow and full of rejections. In a sport where most professionals are noticed earlier, he finally had his breakthrough at age 23.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Two people were key in that breakthrough. At age 15, a coach who taught him how to manage his emotions, and at 22, a coach who saw something in him no one else did.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Those two relationships, combined with Sabastian's competitive drive, galvanized in him a deep confidence that kept him playing soccer at a high level while pursuing an ambitious entrepreneurial path.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;

           Coaching the whole person
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           At age 15, Sebastian met a coach who was really more of a life coach, helping him manage his temper, and find focus. This coach provided the kind of guidance that a strong-willed teenager needed. It was holistic coaching: how to sit still in school, how to speak respectfully to people, even how to navigate first romantic relationship.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The lesson here is to seek mentors who care about the whole person. These types of mentors build character and unlock potential that athletic training alone can't reach.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;

           The lie that opened the door to success
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           One of the most striking stories Sebastian shared was how he showed up to a tryout pretending to be left-footed so he could get a spot on pro team. Needless to say, he was exposed, embarrassed, and expected instant rejection. Instead, the coach laughed, admired Sebastian's audacity, and offered him a place on the team. Eleven months later he was playing in one of Europe’s top leagues.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;blockquote&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            "Anybody who would come here, lie to me, pretend to be left-footed and still go for the tryout, that's the man I want to go into war with."
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/blockquote&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;blockquote&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           That moment was about more than Sebastian's audacity. It was about someone believing in his capacity to adapt and fight. That belief became internalized and accelerated Sebastian's career.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           Channeling anger: emotion as energy
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Anger is a double-edged sword for competitive people. Sebastian calls it an asset as long as it is used intentionally. Early in his career his temper closed doors. Over time he learned to "catch" his anger, taking a breath, listening, and converting the emotion into focused execution.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           Beyond the Standard Definition of Mindset
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           When I asked Gary to define mindset, he went deeper than the standard dictionary definition. Rather than saying "a set of beliefs that drive behavior," Gary offered his definition: “how we experience events, develop thoughts and feelings about them, choose our response, and ultimately form beliefs. In this definition, how we respond is where the magic happens.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Gary also added, “New and improved behaviors must result from a new and improved mindset.” As Andy McCay, the Seattle Mariners' mental performance coach, pointed out, mindset itself means little without new behaviors to back it up. It's circular. New behaviors create new experiences, which reinforce new beliefs, which strengthen the mindset.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Elite Mindset as a Toolbox
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           When I asked Gary what separates an elite mindset from an ordinary one, he described it as a suite of skills assembled like a toolbox. Elite performers don't rely on one tool. They learn to select the right tool at the right time.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Gary used a phrase that really resonates with my own coaching style. He says: “You can never control outcomes, but you can always put yourself in the best position to succeed." This is genius, and the perfect mantra for elite performers. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Goals Versus Desires
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           One of the most insightful things Gary said in our interview was about how high performers set goals. Gary differentiates between goals and desires. A goal is something you can accomplish on your own. A desire requires the help of others. When high performers set major achievements as goals rather than desires, they set themselves up for a frustrating experience.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Consider a defensive tackle in the NFL. If he sets "winning the Super Bowl" as a goal, he's attached his identity and emotional well-being to something he alone can’t control. But if he reframes it as a desire, then seeks help from his coach and teammates, he reduces pressure on himself, increasing the odds of actually winning the Super Bowl.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Optimism Beats Positivity
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            I asked Gary whether being positive is enough to improve performance. Gary's answer was refreshing. He said optimism, not positivity, is the fuel elite performers need. Positivity is a temporary emotional state. Optimism is a philosophy and provides sustainable energy.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           At a recent coaching conference Gary attended, the word "positivity" was hardly mentioned among elite business leaders and athletes. What they discussed was optimism, and how it’s one of the anchors of success.

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           The Profound Power of "Who"

            Perhaps the most moving moment of our interview came when Gary shared how he uncovers his clients' deepest motivations. He told the story of a defensive tackle who initially said he wanted to get faster on the field.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           When Gary kept asking him why, the player eventually reached his bedrock reason. He wanted to buy his mom a house. The player got emotional and Gary knew that he had found a deep motivator that the player could tap into.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           That's the power of finding your “who.” When you connect an elite performer's daily grind to a person they deeply care about, you've accessed the emotional fuel that carries them through adversity.

           One of the biggest roadblocks Gary sees with his clients is overthinking. He uses the metaphor of thoughts being like calories.            Dr. Peter Rios has spoken at Harvard University and consulted with organizations across the country. But his path to success was anything but straightforward.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

           In an interview on the High Performance Podcast, Dr. Rios shared his story of growing up in public housing, being raised by a grandmother with a fourth-grade education and failing community college three times before eventually earning two doctoral degrees.

           Formative Years Shaped by Struggle

           Peter Rios was born in the Bronx and grew up in the projects outside Buffalo, NY. His parents were absent during his early years, leaving his grandmother to raise him. Like many kids in similar circumstances, he struggled with feelings of abandonment.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           "I grew up feeling some level of abandonment," Rios explained. "Always thinking that something was wrong with me because my parents weren't around. Seeing kids at school getting dropped off in nice cars while I had to walk in snowstorms."
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Those early struggles, however, planted the seeds of persistence that would define his later life.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Tested by Rejection
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           A story from his book "Maximize" captures Rios’ persistence. Rios tried out for his school basketball team in seventh grade, eighth grade, ninth grade, tenth grade, eleventh grade, and twelfth. And each year he was rejected.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Some of those rejections had nothing to do with his athletic ability. Coaches dismissed him because of his background or because he had gotten into trouble, including an incident where marijuana was found in his locker.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Most kids his age would have quit. They would have accepted the rejection, even internalized it as unworthiness. But Rios kept showing up.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           It wasn’t until he joined the Marine Corps that a basketball coach finally gave him a chance. The reason? The coach saw Rios’ determination and wanted that energy on the team.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Mentor Who Changed Everything
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           A major turning point in Rios’ life came in tenth grade when Dr. Denoya, who ran an Upward Bound program, walked into his social studies class. Rios was skeptical at first.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           "Here's another person coming to the hood to sell us some dreams," he remembers thinking.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           But Dr. Denoya became what Rios calls his "angel." She introduced him to a growth mindset. When he was expelled after the marijuana incident, she advocated for him like a lawyer, arguing that the school system needed to support him, not deny him his right to an education.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           "She found me as a dysfunctional child, as a troubled youth," Rios said. "That deserves recognition because it's easy to mentor someone who's all cleaned up. It's harder when they're a mess."
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div&gt;&#xD;

           Failing Forward Through College
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           After the Marine Corps, Rios went to community college, but was daunted by academia. He lacked confidence. His GPA dropped to an abysmal 1.5 at one point.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Then he had what he describes as a faith encounter that shifted his perspective. He began to see himself as someone with a purpose and a mission rather than someone just drifting through life.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           "I started to see life differently," he said. "I have a purpose. I have a calling. There's a mission I need to fulfill."
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Focused and determined, he returned to college at age 28 and spent the next decade in education, eventually completing two doctoral degrees.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The Power of Exposure
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Dr. Rios’ book, Maximize, outlines 12 keys for growth. When asked which was the most important key, he chose Exposure.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           "It's hard to believe there's something better (available to you) if you've never been exposed to it," he explained. His time in the Marines took him to Japan and Korea, forcing him out of his comfort zone.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           His advice: expose yourself to new environments and spend time with people who think differently than you do. Growth doesn’t happen in your comfort zone. 
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            ﻿
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h3&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Empty the Gas Tank
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h3&gt;&#xD;
&lt;/div&gt;&#xD;
&lt;div data-rss-type="text"&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Dr. Rios’ book, and his life philosophy, is all about maximizing potential. He often thinks about a quote from the author Myles Munroe: “The richest place on Earth is the cemetery because so many people die without realizing their potential.”
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           "I want to die empty," Rios said. "I want to die having given all of myself."
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           His message for anyone struggling in life is simply don’t quit. Someone will eventually notice your efforts and believe in you. But first, you have to believe in yourself enough to keep knocking on the doors of opportunity.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
